ETHICS OF AI USE

Ethical principles concerning the use of artificial intelligence in the University of Warsaw Press.

I. General principles

1. The UWP recognises that artificial intelligence (AI) can provide support in creative and editorial processes, but that responsibility for the final content lies with humans.
2. AI tools should only be used to improve language, text readability and for data analysis, but must not replace the creative process or be considered authors.
3. Any use of AI technology in the process of creating, editing or reviewing a paper must be explicitly declared to ensure transparency and compliance with the UWP’s ethics policy.

II. Rules for authors

1. Authors are required to disclose any use of AI tools in the creation of their work. A statement of such use must be placed before the bibliography(s) in:

  • single-author monographs,
  • chapters in collective monographs,
  • journal articles.

The statement should include the name of the AI tool used and a description of the purpose, scope and manner of its use in the creation of the work in question.
2. AI may be used to improve the language and readability of the text, but must not replace key creative processes such as formulating scientific conclusions, developing insights or generating research results.
3. Authors are entirely responsible for the accuracy of the data presented, the integrity and originality of the content of their work. AI technology may not be considered an author, co-author or quoted as a source.
4. Any images, figures or graphics generated using AI must be reported to the publisher and are subject to review in accordance with the UWP’s ethical principles. In cases where AI has been used to process image data, this must be clearly described in the study methodology.
